For indoor environments, electric forklifts are the best option. They are environmentally safe, have smaller overall dimensions, and offer lower operating costs — energy and maintenance costs are lower than those of internal combustion forklifts. However, it is important to remember that the initial purchase price of an electric forklift is higher — typically 10–25% more than a forklift with an internal combustion engine. Additionally, after 4–8 years of operation, the traction battery must be replaced, and its price is quite high. Forklifts with internal combustion engines are used outdoors or in well-ventilated areas. The initial cost is lower compared to electric forklifts, but they cannot be used in environments where ecological safety requirements cannot be met. One must also consider fuel and lubricants needed for operation and the cost of mandatory maintenance.
Some petrol forklifts are equipped with LPG systems to reduce CO emissions, but proper ventilation is still required. A forklift with an internal combustion engine generates a lot of heat and cannot be used in food storage warehouses.
Depending on individual needs and the specifics of production processes, a forklift can be equipped with any required attachment. Attachments can be selected during purchase or added later during operation. A forklift is a universal machine: depending on the attachment installed, it can perform various operations, making loading and unloading faster and easier. The most common attachments include:
