Preparation of the forklift for winter

Questions about preparing a forklift for winter operation in low temperatures arise quite often. How should you prepare a forklift for winter? What needs to be done to ensure your forklift performs in cold conditions just as well as it does in warmer weather?

Here are a few recommendations:

  • Replace the fuel and lubricants in all forklift components with winter-grade fluids according to the required specifications (this must be done before the cold season begins, even if you normally use all-season lubricants). When replacing coolant, remember that cold-resistant coolants must not be mixed with other types.

  • The forklift should be kept overnight in a heated room or garage where the temperature is not lower than –10 °C.

  • Battery capacity depends on temperature: in cold conditions, the battery’s capacity decreases. If the forklift’s battery is insufficiently charged, the electrolyte may freeze. To prevent this, ensure the charge level is always above 75%.

  • After starting the engine and warming it up to 50 °C, perform several idle lifts of the mast (load frame) up and down, as well as forward/backward tilting. It is also recommended to activate the power steering hydraulic cylinder by turning the steering wheel. This warms the hydraulic fluid.

  • Check the condition (wear) of the forklift tires and replace them if necessary. In harsh conditions, wheel chains may be required.

By following all of the above recommendations, your forklift will operate confidently and reliably in winter conditions.
