What You Need to Know When Choosing a Forklift
Before purchasing a forklift, you need to find answers to several key questions: What lifting capacity do you require? What lifting height? What type of engine: diesel, LPG, petrol, or electric?
Let’s go step by step.
Lifting capacity is one of the most important parameters, and there are several nuances to consider:
-
first, note that the stated maximum lifting capacity is calculated assuming the load center is no farther than 500 mm from the forklift mast. The farther the load is positioned, the more lifting capacity the forklift loses;
-
second, lifting capacity decreases significantly with increasing lift height. This must be taken into account when choosing a forklift with a lifting height of more than three meters.
Lifting height is directly related to the mast type and the additional options installed on the mast (free lift, side shift). By type, masts are divided into two-stage (Duplex, lift up to four meters) and three-stage (Triplex, lift from four meters). The mast can also be equipped with additional options:
-
free lift — when the carriage with forks rises to a certain height without extending the mast sections, which is useful in confined spaces (railcars, low ceilings).
Another important parameter when choosing a forklift is the engine type. The choice depends not only on economic considerations but also on the working conditions:
-
Diesel forklift. Diesel engines are known for their reliability and durability, but due to high emissions they cannot be used in closed or poorly ventilated spaces. This can be partially corrected with an exhaust filter.
-
Petrol forklift. Petrol engines are also reliable, similar to diesel engines. Their main advantage is ease of use and maintenance.
-
LPG forklift. An LPG engine is not only economical but also practically eliminates the drawbacks of diesel or petrol engines. These forklifts typically use 27-liter or 50-liter gas cylinders.
-
Electric forklift. Widely used indoors and in warehouses. Charging an electric forklift battery is more economical than fuel or gas, but the battery requires specific maintenance.
